Lookbook + Interview: Beauxoxo AW18 Turban Headband Collection

If you've been reading Whim for some time now, you certainly would have seen the beautiful work of Beauxoxo featured before.

With the release of the label's new Autumn / Winter 18 Turban Headband collection, we thought we'd catch up with talented designer Georgie to find out more.

Q: We had the honour of featuring your brand here on Whim back in 2013 and it's a pleasure to see how far you've come since then. What have been your biggest achievements over the past 5 years? How do you think Beauxoxo has changed?

A: When you start a business I think there’s a huge amount of self-doubt to deal with. There’s a big learning curve of trusting yourself to manage your own time, to trust yourself to make important decisions and turn something you love into a profitable business you can live from.

In the early days I had terrible issues with working far too much but now I have a very healthy balance of how I work best and I’m able to trust and rely on others more. When you first start a business you feel so protective over every single thing, but I’ve so enjoyed leaning on the wisdom of others and letting go a bit more these days!

For me I’ve learnt to schedule in downtime, build a team that enabled me to best manage my time and resources and most importantly create a routine that takes care of myself emotionally and physically as well as building a profitable business. You also have to realise that your business and dreams won’t work unless you do! So it’s paramount to always put your well being before anything else. I’m really proud of how I’ve grown in that aspect.

Q: We adore your new lookbook for the AW18 Turban Headband collection! What was the inspiration behind your collection?

A: Thank you so much! It’s truly one of my favourite shoots as well. The New Forest is one of my favourite parts of the UK and I'm so lucky to have this stunning landscape just moments away from where I am in Dorset. It's a spot I've forever dreamed of photo-shooting in, so for my new collection of turban headbands for AW18, I set about creating a bohemian dreamy lookbook setting. The New Forest has a mosaic of habitats including lowland wet and dry heaths, mires and bogs, and majestic ponies and horses that make the landscape look like an enchanted wonderland. Because of this, I just knew it would be a stunning backdrop for a lookbook for my boho headbands where I wanted to embody the spirit of the area I loved so very much.

Q: Please tell us more about the experience you had planning the lookbook?

A: As described above, the setting was somewhere that truly told the story beautifully. So to add to this, I picked out some vintage long lace dresses, shawls and I also had the joy of using the prettiest jewels to accompany the look for this shoot with necklaces from my beautiful friend Jessica who makes stunning crystal necklaces at Roses and Whiskey and bracelets from Crystal Cactus.

I’ve been fascinated by the healing properties of gemstones and crystals this year so I loved having those companies accompany me on this shoot. For thousands of years, ancient civilisations have utilised the power of crystals to release mental, physical and spiritual blockages, and I love how every crystal serves as a tool to help the thoughts of our consciousness connect with our body. It was really amazing to have that added symbolism to this lookbook and it worked so beautifully in this setting which happens to also be deeply spiritual.

Q: What advice would you offer to emerging fashion designers wanting to follow in your footsteps?

A: To just go out and do it! The world is waiting for you to get out and live out your passions and dreams. Sometimes taking that big huge leap into the self-employed world is terrifying so I always advise people to just make small steps each day. It’s far better to build on something consistently then to never start at all. But ultimately if you have an idea you truly want to make happen just start anywhere and start now and just see what happens.

This quote is one of my favourites for this: ‘There has never been and never will be another you. You have a purpose - a very special gift that only you can bring to the world.’ This quote is so powerful because I truly believe that we really do all have something special and unique to offer to this world and it’s about finding the best ways to share that with everyone. Start with what you have and what you love and set about bringing everything you are into what you do and that’s where you find the most success and fulfilment.

Q: Lastly, what do you hope the not-too-distant future holds for Beauxoxo? Do you have any exciting, upcoming plans you would like to share with us?

A: I’m deeply passionate about building on my charity projects next year so I’m really excited that I’ll be in India building and finding a community to help support and who I can work on exclusive projects with. It’s the biggest challenge and adventure I have faced so far but I’m so passionate about starting some deeply personal and giving back in a huge way to those less fortunate.
